Pod Vapes vs Disposables: Open vs Closed Pod Systems and the Real Cost per mL

Updated October 11, 2026

Disposables, prefilled pod systems and refillable pod systems all use the same basic parts: a battery, a coil and e-liquid. What changes is which parts you replace and which you keep. That decides how much upkeep each type needs and what you pay per mL of e-liquid. Here's how they compare, with real prices from our store at 5171 Yonge St in North York.

The three types

Disposable vapes

A sealed device with the battery, coil and e-liquid built in. You use it until the e-liquid runs out, then replace the whole thing. Most larger disposables now have a USB-C port, so the battery can be recharged until the e-liquid is gone. There's nothing to fill or change. Our disposable vape guide covers the models we carry, sorted by size.

Closed pod systems (prefilled pods)

A reusable battery, usually called a base or device, plus sealed pods that come filled with e-liquid and have their own coil. When a pod is empty, you swap in a new one and keep the battery. You never handle e-liquid. Pods usually fit only their own brand's base. Examples we stock:

  • Oxbar Maglink: 30 mL pods that attach to a magnetic base. The starter kit includes the base and a first pod.
  • Level X G2: 20 mL G2 Ultra pods on a G2 base.

Open pod systems (refillable pods)

A reusable battery plus empty pods that you fill from a bottle of e-liquid. You pick the e-liquid, including its nicotine strength, and replace the pod (or its coil) when the taste fades. They take a little more care: filling, letting a new pod soak before the first use, and now and then clearing condensation. Examples we stock:

Refillable pods and tanks sold in Canada must be child-resistant, which is why you'll see "CRC" on kits like the Caliburn G4 and G5 Lite.

How to work out cost per mL

Puff counts are manufacturer estimates, so the fairest comparison is cost per mL of e-liquid:

  • Disposable: price Γ· mL. A $40 disposable with 20 mL of e-liquid costs $2.00 per mL.
  • Prefilled pod: pod price Γ· pod mL. A $35 pod with 30 mL costs about $1.17 per mL. Add the base once.
  • Refillable pod: bottle price Γ· bottle mL, plus your share of replacement pods. A $30, 30 mL bottle costs $1.00 per mL. Add the kit once.

The hard part with refillable pods is how long each pod lasts. It depends on the e-liquid, the power and how much you vape, and manufacturers don't publish a figure, so treat it as an estimate. As an illustration, if a $5.50 replacement pod lasts through 15 mL of e-liquid, it adds about $0.37 per mL. If it lasts through 30 mL, it adds about $0.18 per mL. Replace a pod when the taste turns burnt or flat, or gurgling won't clear.

What it costs at our prices

Here's how the numbers work out at our regular shelf prices on October 11, 2026, before tax, for products in stock that day. Prices change, so check the product page for today's price.

Type Examples Cost per mL
Small disposables 2 to 13 mL $2.31 to $8.00
Mid-size disposables 18 to 20 mL $1.67 to $2.22
Large disposables 25 to 30 mL $1.33 to $1.80
Prefilled pods 20 to 30 mL pods $1.17 to $1.70, plus a base
Refillable pods 30 mL nic salt $1.00 to $1.20, plus pods and a kit
Refillable pods 60 mL bottles $0.77 to $0.83, plus pods and a kit

Two things stand out. Small disposables cost the most per mL by a wide margin. And once you add a share of replacement pods, refillable pods with 30 mL bottles land in the same range as prefilled pods and large disposables. Refillable pods pull ahead per mL mainly with 60 mL bottles, which come in nic salt and in lower-strength freebase.

A worked example: 60 mL of e-liquid

  • Large disposables: two 30 mL disposables come to $79.98 to $93.98 ($39.99 to $46.99 each).
  • Prefilled pods (Oxbar Maglink): the starter kit ($39.99, with a 30 mL pod) plus one more pod ($35.00) comes to $74.99. After that, 60 mL is two pods: $70.00.
  • Refillable pods (Caliburn G5 Lite): the kit ($20.99), two 30 mL bottles of Vice Salt ($59.98) and the share of a $21.99 four-pack of compatible replacement pods used along the way (two to four pods, about $11 to $22) come to about $92 to $103 the first time. After that, the same 60 mL costs about $71 to $82, or about $61 to $72 with a single 60 mL bottle.

Before tax, at October 11, 2026 shelf prices. Your numbers will depend on the products you choose and how long your pods last.

Beyond price

  • Upkeep: disposables need none. Prefilled pods just click in. Refillable pods need filling, a 3 to 10 minute soak for each new pod depending on the brand (the Uwell Caliburn manuals we checked say 10 minutes), and the occasional wipe-down.
  • Choice of e-liquid and strength: most disposables and prefilled pods we carry are 20 mg/mL, Canada's legal maximum, and use nicotine salt. Refillable pods let you choose from bottled e-liquids, including lower strengths. Our e-liquid guide explains nic salt, freebase and PG/VG.
  • Compatibility: pods usually only fit their own system, and sometimes only certain models within it. Check the pack before you buy; our listing for Caliburn GPP pods, for example, names the Caliburn G3, G4 and G5 series, and Level X G2 Ultra pods click into a Level X G2 base.
  • Leaks: refillable pods can gurgle or leak if they're overfilled, if the fill plug isn't closed right away, or if the liquid is too thin for the coil. Our troubleshooting guide covers leaks and gurgling.
  • Battery waste: with any pod system you keep one battery and replace only pods. Each disposable you finish means another battery for household hazardous waste. Our Toronto disposal guide explains where those go.

Which type fits you?

  • A disposable if you want no upkeep at all, or you vape only now and then.
  • A prefilled pod system if you go through disposables regularly and would rather keep one battery, without handling e-liquid.
  • A refillable pod system if you want to choose your own e-liquid and nicotine strength, and don't mind filling and changing pods.

Common questions

Is a pod vape the same as a disposable?
No. A disposable is one sealed unit that you replace when it's empty. A pod vape keeps its battery and replaces only the pod.

What's the difference between open and closed pod systems?
Closed systems use sealed, prefilled pods. Open systems use refillable pods you fill from a bottle of e-liquid.

Can I refill a prefilled pod?
No. Prefilled pods are sealed, like disposables. If you want to refill, choose an open pod system.

What do terms like MTL, mesh coil or priming mean?
See our vape glossary.
